Helping Your Business Navigate The New Gas Oil Regulations
From 1st April 2022 new government regulations will come into force that will see several sectors banned from using red diesel. Those businesses included in these sectors will need to switch from red diesel to DERV (Diesel Engine Road Diesel) or an alternative green fuel such as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil).
The new regulations result from the government’s original policy to decarbonise all sectors of the UK economy to help mitigate climate change and to achieve its targets in improved air quality.
From 1st April 2022 the government is removing tax relief for red diesel for many of its current users. As a result, fewer companies will be entitled to use red diesel and rebated fuels.
What will this mean for your business?
Check the list below to see if you will continue to be entitled to use red diesel or rebated fuel.
If your business is in the following list of industries you will not be able to use red diesel or rebated fuel from 1st April 2022:
- Airport operations and ports
- Commercial heating
- Construction and road maintenance
- Leisure
- Logistics and haulage
- Mining and quarrying
- Manufacturing
- Oil and gas extraction
- Waste management
If you’re no longer able to use rebated fuel, you should plan to run down the fuel you have to as close to nil as reasonably practicable before 1 April 2022.
You are then advised to remove redundant fuel that you have in stock, clean empty fuel tanks and replace the original fuel with white road diesel or a green alternative such as HVO, which is one of the cleanest fuels on the market.
